JOIN THE DANCE

Lucas wiped sweat off his brow with a dish towel. He was breathing hard after just clearing a dozen tables. He had moved as quickly and efficiently as he ever had in his life, but he was still behind everyone else. He felt out of sync, which was even worse than simply being slow. He’d almost bashed into people trying to refill waters and clear appetizer plates. But at least the work--his mistakes even--had kept his thoughts off of his mother and Garrett and what the Hell he was going to do. Just slowing down at this moment though brought it all rushing back.

And Konstantin knows all about it. Lucas gripped the towel tightly in his hand. Why did I tell him all of that? I can’t imagine what he thinks of me. And what if he tries to fix this?

A hand fell on his shoulder. Lucas turned and found Jamal smiling at him. The handsome black man wasn’t sweating and didn’t look winded at all despite doing more work than Lucas.

“Hey, how are you doing?” Jamal asked.

“Uh, how do you think I’m doing?” Lucas asked back with a grin that was a little fragile.

“Great, actually. Here’s some water.” Jamal handed him a bottle of Perrier.

Lucas opened it and downed it practically in one swallow. He was in one of the beautiful uniforms that Kim had created for him and he hated sweating in it. But she had assured him not to worry about it.

“These are quality materials. They will hold up to cleaning and we know how to treat them to keep them looking their best. So give it your worst,” Kim had told him with a smile.

“I swear, Jamal, I will catch up,” Lucas said, though he had no idea how. Everyone here moved with absolute precision and speed that seemed to almost be at a blur. He felt slow and clumsy.

“You’re doing just fine, Lucas. In fact, you already have a fan.” Jamal tilted his head towards a table where Angelis sat with another rough-looking biker type. On seeing Lucas glance over, Angelis lifted his glass of wine, tipped his head and smiled in acknowledgement.

Lucas nodded back, but quickly looked away and felt his cheeks flush for some reason. Maybe because he instantly remembered Angelis making out with another biker boy on the stairs.

“Angelis is a trip,” Lucas said. “He definitely likes his bit of rough, doesn’t he?”

Jamal watched Angelis’ dinner companion--who had full sleeves of tattoos that were revealed in all their glory by the leather vest he wore as a shirt--devour one of the thick steaks while he stared at the beautiful Angelis like he wanted to be eating him.

“He does at that. Normally, though, the guys are bigger,” Jamal answered as he took in the mammoth biker opposite Angelis.

Lucas snorted, but when Jamal did not laugh with him, he asked, “Really?”

“Really,” Jamal told him with a laugh.

“Okay, to each their own. I’m cool with that.”

“You’ll find a lot of… odd couples here,” Jamal told him.
